The Beginning of La Bottega

For anyone who has worked in or around Buchanan Square – La Bottega will be well known to you as the local gathering place for Italian food and a good time. Founded in 2009 by their current owners Alistair Wilson and Antonello Scamuzzi and has gone from success to success ever since. Alistair took some time out to tell us a bit about the beginnings of La Bottega, the journey that they have been on with La Bottega and where they see the restaurant going in the next few years.

La Bottega was conceptualized over a few beers and within no time Alistair and Antonello had found a premise and building began. The pair designed the restaurant around what they enjoyed – which was a place where people could come and enjoy a cup of coffee, a cold beer and some good food. The name ‘La Bottega’ is an Italian term for ‘corner shop’ – where pretty much anything goes.

In the process of running the restaurant the pair have teamed up with some great brands such as Origin Coffee and Boston Breweries. With Origin Coffee they have developed their own unique La Bottega blend of Guatemalan beans and El Salvador beans. They have also brought in the range of craft beers such as their Pumpkin Ale and Wild Honey Blonde Ale brewed with Fynbos Honey. They have also brought in a six-line draught tap.

The shop offers patrons Grab & Go items as well as a seat on their expansive deck. The menu has been kept simple with great Italian food done the right way. They also run certain ‘business as usual’ specials during 10:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 16:00 for late breakfasts and late lunches.

La Bottega is open from Monday to Friday from 8am till 6pm. The position of La Bottega works well for those leaving the city. Due to the trading hours, the open evenings allow the venue to be used for private functions such as birthday parties of product launches.
